HOW THIS VISION CAME ABOUT

The vision has emerged through extensive and committed research made by the author and it is influenced by a great variety of experiences which have played a role in the author's life.

The year 1993 is a turning point. Prior to 1993 a reading of the existing conditions and systems baffled the author no end... Visits to the villages showed that there was simplicity and contentment but also poverty, disorganization, instances of injustice and wretchedness. People often said that the general population is venal and nothing good can come out of it; but intense participation in youth activities indicated there is great untapped potential in youth and in others and that this was not effectively being channelized. There were people doing hard work in the field of social activity, it was producing relief but it did not seem to be taking people anywhere; problems were not being addressed effectively. The books of wisdom were treasures but none of it was being utilized for the grooming of the secular common-man. Human resources were plentiful in the villages but these were being pretty badly managed...

In 1993 while preparing for Civil Services Examinations at the Periyar Thidal in Chennai there was a new beginning. This preparatory institution had teachers who were experts in the field of law and History and they facilitated a deep understanding of background to the present systems. Access to the Connemara and the Madras University libraries were a great help. As the various aspects of the larger picture became increasingly apparent the author began taking down notes... That exposure in that period was excellent, the pretext was preparation for Civil Services Exam, but wide reading happened and development started happening in some other direction...

Passionate writing started happening side by side; it was not uncommon to sit up to 3.00 or 4.00 in the morning writing away about what was wrong with the systems and their approaches, and how change could be brought about… All this resulted in a committed research into the ways of, and solutions for, the present system. The passion for searching for solutions has continued ever since. A huge volume of writing was created by around 1996. The ideas were compiled and split up into five sections and were expanded into essays and chapters; these, after constant refining, after 20 years, have manifested into one book and three manuscripts as indicated in the column to the left here.

The influences that have gone into this writing are also characterized by important vintage positions which the author was privileged to access; this has helped in assimilation of a great diversity of human experience and has furthered the cause of this vision. One of the most important of these is the blessing of a wonderful family and grooming in a practical and practicing faith. The reading of the biographies of Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru and Mahatma Gandhi as part of the college syllabus was an important step forward. Solid foundations in science were laid through a basic post-graduation degree in Nuclear Physicsthe author's fundamentals are strong and the academic credentials have been above average. Growing up in a cosmopolitan culture with the influence of the literature and culture of five different languages and with friends and parental influences from across the nation has been a great help in assimilating diversity. Studies at excellent institutions of learning in the north Karnataka region and under remarkable teachers also happened in parallel with good opportunities to be passionately involved in a whole set of arts and games...

The sense of belonging to communities ranging from the rural hand-to-mouth existence types to the officialdom and aristocracy of the elite in the armed forces has been important from the point of view of empathizing with a large spectrum in society. Great exposure to leadership and leadership training happened through youth groups, college teams, ten years at the Cradle of Military Leadership (NDA), interacting with many luminaries on a one-to-one basis during this period, two years at the Masters Program in Government course for leaders in government and an extended internship under the mercurial Mr. TN Seshan, the former CEC of India and Magsaysay awardee. Even now one continues to learn at the remarkable Great Lakes Institute of Management pioneered by one of India's global thought leaders, Prof Bala Balachander and his excellent team.

Practical on-ground experience of stay in villages, several conventions of the National Alliance of Peoples’ movements, the visits to successful village revolutions, a month’s internship at the headquarters of a leading political party of India, extensive travel, including Europe and from the Himalays to Kanya Kumari have given remarkable focused on-ground exposure to realities.

The benefit of attending more than a dozen intensive personality development and spiritual courses is an important dimension in growth and the feather on the cap being the grooming under the guidance of a live self-realized master.

Catholic in faith and Hindu in outlook, gaining the best from many worlds; cultured in the indigenous and educated in the western; neither too rich not too poor and yet able to see both ends; groomed neither in a laid back environ of a village nor in the hustle bustle of a city but having good exposure of both; neither totally into studies, or into games or into the arts but introduced to all aspects... These are some examples of the immense opportunities the author has been blessed with and they all help widen the perspective behind the vision...

And yet this vision is not complete; it is merely a coherent thought process that will need the endowed specialists in the various fields to chip in; after having awareness of this larger picture…
This is a reasonable take-off point for a focused national debate.
